How to Log and Report Malicious Calls with Call Trace (*57)

At TELAIR, we’re committed to keeping you safe and in control of your phone experience. If you’ve received a harassing, threatening, or malicious call, our Call Trace (*57) feature can help you log and report it. This article explains how Call Trace works, how to use it, and additional tools available to manage unwanted calls.

What is Call Trace (*57)?

Call Trace is a feature that allows you to flag and record details of a malicious call—such as the phone number, date, and time—immediately after it occurs. This information is securely stored by TELAIR and can be shared with law enforcement if you choose to file a report. It’s a powerful tool for addressing serious issues like harassment, threats, or obscene calls.

How to Use Call Trace (*57)

  1. Receive a Malicious Call: If you get a call that feels threatening or inappropriate, hang up as soon as possible.
  2. Dial 57 Immediately: Using the same phone line, pick up the receiver (or unlock your mobile device) and dial *57 right after the call ends.
  3. Follow the Prompts: You’ll hear a recorded message confirming that the call has been traced. The details are logged in our system—no further action is needed from you at this step.
  4. Take Further Action (Optional):
    • For serious cases, contact your local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 to file a report. Let them know you’ve used Call Trace, and we can provide the traced call details to authorities upon request.

Important Notes:

  • You must dial *57 before making or receiving another call, as it only logs the most recent call on your line.
  • Call Trace doesn’t display the caller’s information to you—it’s recorded for reporting purposes only.

Availability and Costs

  • Availability: Call Trace is available to most TELAIR customers with an active phone plan. Check your account details or contact our support team to confirm eligibility.
  • Cost: A small fee may apply per use ($5.00 per trace).

Additional Tools for Managing Calls

While Call Trace is ideal for serious incidents, we offer other ways to handle unwanted calls:

  1. Automatic Call Logging: Your phone’s call history already records details of every call (number, time, duration) for your reference—no special code needed.
  2. Spam Call Filtering: Our specific spam-blocking uses advanced technology to identify and report (in caller ID) suspicious calls before they reach you.
  3. Manual Reporting on Smartphones: On your iOS or Android device, you can mark a call as spam:
    • Open your call log.
    • Select the number and choose “Block” or “Report as Spam.”
  4. National Do Not Call List (DNCL): Reduce telemarketing calls by registering your number at 1-866-580-3625 or online via the CRTC website.

When to Use Call Trace vs. Other Options

  • Use Call Trace (57) for: Serious threats, harassment, or illegal activity requiring law enforcement involvement.
  • Use Spam Filtering or Blocking for: Everyday annoyances like robocalls or telemarketers.
