Configure Router to Bridge Mode

Many ISP’s (Internet Service Provider) provide modems with built in router and wireless capabilities, however not all of these devices are compatible with VoIP devices. In order to continue to use newer provided modems / hardware from your ISP with your IP Phone devices, some additional configuration is required to make everything work.

Please note: You will require a compatible working Router / Modem to work in conjunction with configuring your current ISP provided modem to operate in bride mode. If you do not have a compatible router ready, please do not continue.

We do not take any responsibility for any other network changes, malfunction, or wireless passcodes that may occur after making any changes to your equipment. Please consult your IT technician before attempting to make any network changes.

Any per-configured network access for shared devices, printers, drives may require additional setup after making these changes.

Step-by-step guide

Due to the vast amount of different ISP provided modem’s please follow the general guide below to prepare your modem for bridge mode.

  1. Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
  2. Request instructions / guide to configure your modem to bridge mode (also referred to as: disable gateway features).
    1. This will require you to log into your current ISP provided modem and update settings.
  3. Once the modem has been updated to bridge mode or disable gateway features, the modem will reboot.
  4. Please unplug all devices from your ISP provided modem.
  5. Plug in your compatible router into the ISP provided modem via the WAN port on your new router.
    1. Plug your compatible router to any available network port on the back of your ISP provided modem.
    2. Use the WAN network port on the back of the compatible router to plug into your ISP provided modem.
  6. You are now ready to plug your devices into the new compatible router.
  7. Log into your new router and configure your network settings and remember enable security features and passwords for your wireless networks if the router is wireless enabled.
  8. Plug in your IP phone hardware.
There should be 1 cable between your ISP provided modem and your compatible router. Remember to set wireless passwords to your compatible router!
